Recessed lighting has long been a staple in modern architecture, valued for both its functionality and its ability to enhance interior aesthetics. Modulo, designed by Mohammad Mostafa Sharifianmehr, elevates this concept to new heights. This luminaire stands out with its modular approach, allowing for unprecedented customization and adaptability in lighting design. Modulo's flexibility and design excellence recently garnered it the prestigious Bronze A' Lighting Projects and Light Art Design Award in 2024, highlighting its impact on the industry.
Modulo's design is characterized by its three distinct modules: Outside, Inside, and Lamp. Each module offers a plethora of options, from shapes and sizes to colors and lighting specifications. The Outside module can be selected in either circular or square forms, while the Inside module allows for adjustable or fixed configurations. The Lamp module further personalizes the experience with various cap colors, Kelvin temperatures, light intensities, and beam angles. This level of customization is a testament to Modulo's commitment to versatility and user-centric design.
The luminaire's construction utilizes aluminum for its base material, chosen for its lightweight properties and excellent thermal conductivity, which is crucial for LED performance. The anodizing process not only enhances the durability of Modulo but also provides a range of aesthetic finishes. With a common recessed light size of 8cm for a single candle light, Modulo aligns with industry standards while pushing the boundaries of design innovation.
Modulo's design process, which began in Tehran in April 2021, was driven by a desire to transform a common light source into a versatile design element. The project team, including Sharifianmehr, Seyedsajad Jalalsadat, and Atieh Koochakmanesh, faced the challenge of creating a luminaire that could harmonize with any space and be easily updated with minimal cost and effort. Their solution was a modular system that could be altered by changing just one or two components, reflecting a commitment to sustainable and cost-effective design.
The Modulo luminaire not only provides a functional lighting solution but also serves as an interactive design element. Architects and designers can effortlessly integrate Modulo into their projects, ensuring that the lighting is not just an afterthought but a central component of the space's design narrative. This interaction between light and architecture is what sets Modulo apart, making it a deserving recipient of the Bronze A' Design Award and a beacon of innovation in the lighting industry.
Modulo's recognition at the A' Design Awards is a testament to its design excellence and the team's dedication to merging art, science, design, and technology. As the luminaire continues to illuminate spaces around the world, it stands as a shining example of how thoughtful design can enhance our living environments and contribute to a better quality of life.
